Are you focusing too much on your competition?

Paul Graham from the start up incubator Y combinator regularly tells startups that “most businesses die by suicide rather than homicide.”

What he means by this is that when a business fail it’s unlikely to be due to competitors and competitive forces but rather decisions that entrepreneurs make within them.

As a small business owner your have much more control over your own destiny than a competitor of any size will.

So focus less (ideally not at all) on the moves your competitors are making and look only what what is going on in your business.
